The graduating class of 94’ will be having a reunion on the 31st of October 2009 (Saturday) at SMK Taman Desa. Some of the planned highlights for the reunion include inter-class sports competitions, an open karaoke session and a special dinner.

The principal and former teachers who taught these batch of students will be among the invited guests. A heartfelt thanks to the principal Mr Gan Peng Kheang for his support of this event.

Rules and Regulations

1. Open to all students of SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.

2. The competition will be divided into 2 categories : Morning Session and Afternoon Session.

3. Participants must fill in an Entry Form and register with : Lee Ming Yew (5 S1)/ Tim Koh ( 2B).

4. Participants are required to pay RM1.50 as registration fee.

5. Theme : A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

6. Subjects : People, Buildings, Landscapes, Nature, Sports or Festivals

( Any one of the above)

7. There is no limit on the numbers of entries. Participants are required to submit a 4R

( 4”x6” or 6”x 4) colour photograph (hard copy) and also on a new CD-ROM ( only in jpeg format
and the size of the image must not be smaller than 2MB and in 300dpi ).

8. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. The CD must be labelled with the participant’s name and class.

9. All entries must be accompanied by a fully completed entry form. (Photocopy of the entry form is not acceptable).

10. Digital super imposition or composition is not allowed. However, minor image touch-up is
allowed and these include adjustment of brightness of colour or sharpening of the image.

11. All photographs submitted must be personally taken by the participant and must not have been published elsewhere or have won a prize in any other photography competitions. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that the photographs submitted must have been taken with the permission of the subject and do not infringe the copyright of any third party or any laws.

12. The judging of this competition will be based on content, composition, quality, technique and creativity in relation to the theme “A Picture is Worth a Thousand words”.

13. By participating in this competition, all participants agree to allow his or her name or photographs to be published on the school’s website and other forms of media. Participants also agree to be bound by the rules and regulations as well as the decisions made by the organizer and the panel of judges.

14.All photographs submitted will not be returned and shall remain the property of the Photography Club of SMK Taman Desa.

15. All entries must be received by 30^th September 2009.

16. Each participant is entitled to one prize only.

Communicate your angst and win prizes in the process!

Lots of people will tell you that your teenage years can be the greatest years of your life. Perhaps you don’t think so. And you’re probably right. You’ve got every reason to gripe about being misunderstood. Not only do you have to wrestle with personal issues like self-image, you also have to deal with external, social issues that trail you - pornography, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy, among others. You’re at a challenging phase in your life right now. But don’t feel pressured when you feel down. “Growing up” isn’t as easy as it’s made out to be!The Star and Pizza Hut’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) contest wants you to channel that energy because we know that no one understands these issues better than teenagers themselves.

Rules and Regulations:

Participants
The contest is open to all primary 4 to 6 and secondary school students in Malaysia. Participation is through schools only, i.e. entries from individuals or tuition centres will not be entertained.

Registration
Schools can register online at http://contests.thestar.com.my/nie from Apr 1-Apr 30. The registration list will be published on May 24 in StarEducation. Schools/contest coordinators are to check to ensure their teams are on the list.

What are participants required to do?
Under the supervision of their English language teacher, students work in teams of four/five to produce a 3-page mini magazine of their own title that investigates, probes and addresses an issue of teen angst.

Teams may focus on an issue/topic listed in the following (or a teenage angst issue of their choice):
1. Dealing with a jealous friend
2. Bullying
3. My parents, my friends?
4. Cliques in school
5. Favouritism at home and at school
6. Handling examination pressure
7. Internet addiction
8. Substance abuse
9. Teen dating versus studying
10. Smoking
11. Self-harming behaviours
12. Teens and body image
13. Teen suicide
14. Runaway teens

Projection of the chosen issue/topic in the mini magazine must be in the form of a feature article. Include three other elements which can be found in a magazine (eg.interviews, short stories, poems, advice columns/agony aunt pages, comic strips, anecdotes, advertisements, polls, surveys).

Format/content of magazine
Each team must use the original blank magazine template published in the Star-NiE pullouts on Apr 1 and Apr 22 to create their self-titled mini magazine for the contest.

The 3-page magazine must be based on the theme of teenage angst.

The content of the magazine must be written to include (but is not limited to):
• A feature article (which is compulsory)
• AND at least three elements of the following:
Interviews, short stories, poems, advice columns/agony aunt pages, comic strips, anecdotes, advertisements, pictures, photographs, polls, surveys, dialogue boxes, etc.

The front page of the magazine (tabloid size A3) has space for a self-titled masthead for the mini magazine, followed by pages two and three on a broadsheet/centre spread.

Feature article
It is compulsory for each team to write a feature article on the topic selected. With all other elements being equal, the strength of the feature article will carry the most weight in the awarding of prizes.

The feature article must include at least one illustration, picture or photograph.

Length of the feature article:
• Primary – 500 words
• Lower secondary – 800 words
• Upper secondary – 1,000 words and above

Marks will be allocated for layout, creativity, content and use of language.

Qualification for prizes
Each student can only be the member of one team.

Participants must be in teams of four or five.

Each participating team must submit a self-titled mini magazine that is designed on three A3 pages of Star-NiE’s original template.

Teams that submit a 3-minute video clip may stand a chance to win exciting prizes in the video clip category.

The video clip should be formatted on MPEG files that are supported by Windows Media Player, and must be downloaded into a Compact Disc only. The disc must be clearly labelled with the team’s name and school.

Each team may submit more than one entry, but only one entry per team shall be eligible to compete in the Grand Prize level, i.e. the Merit Awards and Grand Prizes.

Students may conduct research from books, articles and the Internet but materials must not be plagiarised. Plagiarism will result in the disqualification of an entry.

For each team member to qualify for a personal pan pizza voucher from Pizza Hut, the team must produce a 3-page mini magazine that is designed on the original template published in the Star-NiE pullouts on Apr 1 and Apr 22.

For each team member to qualify for a regular pan pizza voucher from Pizza Hut, each team must either:

• Produce two 3-page mini magazines (of different topics)
OR
• (In addition to one 3-page mini magazine) produce a 3-minute video clip in the form of an advertisement, a PSA (Public Service Announcement) or a message tackling the issue/topic featured in the mini magazine. The clip must then be downloaded into a Compact Disc (with another original Form C attached) and submitted together with the mini magazine.

Pizza Hut vouchers
The contest coordinator from each participating school will receive a coordinator level prize of a RM50 Pizza Hut voucher.

Teachers stand a chance to win one or three Pizza Hut regular pan pizza voucher(s).

The list of teams and teachers receiving their vouchers will be published on 19 July in StarEducation.

The Pizza Hut vouchers for the participating students and teachers will be sent to the schools in August.

Grand prize finalists
For students to stand a chance to take part in the Grand Prize level, the contest coordinator from each participating school MUST NOMINATE ONE ENTRY for the mini magazine category and ONE 3-minute video clip for the Video Clip category for the relevant levels – primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.

Failure to do so on the school’s part will result in the automatic disqualification of entry in the Grand Prize level.

Two finalist teams from each level are to give a formal presentation on their mini magazine in English to a panel of judges in September.

The judges’ decision is final. All winning entries will become the property of the contest organisers. Insightful articles will be published in Star-NiE’s Stuff@school.

Note: The video clip entry is solely optional. Judging for the merit and grand prize award will be based solely on the mini-magazine category.

Submission of entries
The Contest Coordinator (teacher-in-charge) who coordinates the contest in school submits the entries together with a copy of the completed registration form downloaded from the contest website.

Contest coordinators must submit their schools’ entries (as proof of participation and for judging) in one batch by June 20. Entries must be sent to:

Each school may submit more than one mini-magazine or video clip entry.

Every mini-magazine entry must be submitted on an original mini-magazine template published on April 1 and April 22 in Star-NiE.

In the video clip category, use an original copy of Form C as a cover/sleeve for the team’s video entry. One CD must contain only one video clip. For example, if a team sends in five video clips, the team must download each clip onto five separate discs, each attached with an original Form C. Each entry must be a team effort of either four or five students, and should be supervised by an English language teacher.

Proof of postage is not proof of receipt.

A Milestone Achieved

Today marks a new chapter in the history of SMK Taman Desa. After months of planning, compiling of information, fine-tuning and with the relentless support from the PIBG (PTA), school administrators, teachers and students, finally, the school's official website has become a reality. We are truly indebted to the PIBG for their financial support and our technical advisor, Mr Tay for his excellent level of technical expertise which has made it possible. Thank you very much.

The School has developed a user friendly website tool for educational purposes that improves communication amongst students and teachers (current, past and potential), parents, friends and colleagues of the same fraternity, thus strengthening the communication networks. The website is informative, organized and focused on the activities (academic and co-curriculum) of the School and her achievements. The top bar of the web have details of interest: of the School history; profile of the School; Vision & Mission; Statistics; Peraturan Sekolah; Bimbingan & Kaunseling; Disiplin and details of Organizational chart in the School etc. There’s also a countdown to the important public examination dates :-

Patriotic Song Contest

In conjunction with the 51st National Day celebration, a Patriotic Song Contest was held to instil and inculcate the spirit of patriotism among students and love for the our country, Malaysia.

1 Bayan with their talented musicians..
Malaysiaku Gemilang presented by 2 Camar. The class showed that they had great musicians as well.

1 E worked well together to give their best.

There was a pin drop silence when 2 Bayan took centre stage. Their song entitled Muhibbah, was a popular patriotic song in the 70’s. The class “Mozart” Joycelin Wong did an incredible job by rewriting the Melody of the song and the conductress with the graceful movements was Siaw Hui. In a sentence the song, Muhibbah has a message of the spirit of multi-racial togetherness. As the lyrics tell us when the multi-racial Malaysians live together in unity and harmony there will be joy, progress, prosperity and success. Kudos to 2 Bayan for their incredible performance.

Merdeka Celebration

Walk Together to Fulfill our Vision!

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved our targeted amount of RM 60,000.00.

As of 30th August, at 10 a.m., the total collection was RM 56,861.15. However our PIBG had generously offered to top-up to a round figure of RM 60,000.00 (Ringgit Sixty thousand only).

Have we ever known, SMKTD's students, fail in anything they set out to achieve??? No, never!!!
Yes, it is indeed amazing that within such a short span of time and under the present economic conditions, the PTA, staff and students of SMKTD were able to achieve the targeted amount. The afternoon session’s students deserved special recognition and congratulations too. Their extraordinary effort contributed to almost 50% of the total collections.

some walk, some run but all for a good cause.. Demi Chen from Form 1 Camar single handedly collected RM 5,732.20 .The highest class collection of RM 7,606.75 was from Form 1 Camar .

Mr Chang Kim Loong, AMN, the PTA Chairman, affirmed that the funds collected will be put to good use that is to fund for special projects for the benefits of SMKTD’s students.
Mr Gan Peng Kheang, the Principal, thanked and commended everyone for their incredible efforts in making this fundraising project a great success.

Competition is good. No winner without a competition. Our competition organized by the School is healthy. It takes you away from the usual classes that you attend in School and this sport event: Walkaton promotes the combine effort of all the students, teachers and PIBG with the view that we have team work in making our project successful. We have successfully managed to garner collection of a total of RM 56,861.15. Our PIBG had a quick meeting just now and would like to offer to top-up the figure to a round figure of RM 60,000.00 (Ringgit Sixty thousand only). The collection will be put to good use for the betterment of the infrastructure of the School as well as activities that benefits the students of this School. I am amazed with Demi Chen (1 Camar ) who single handedly collected RM 5,732.20 whilst the highest class effort collection of RM 7,606.75 is from Class 1 Camar 1.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the St John Ambulance for stationing their members along the route. Appreciation too have to be accorded to Class 4Sc1 & 4Sc2 for the excellent performance. Actually ‘main-main sahaja’ from the beginning and gradually became serious in their formation especially during the martial arts segment. Appreciation too to Pengawas Disiplin, Setiausaha Sukan dan Guru-Guru. (Applauses to the groups). Sekian, terima kasih.

On the 15th of August, a ceremony was held during the school’s assembly to kick off the month long Merdeka Celebration- the 51st anniversary of our Nation's independence.

This year the Motto for the Merdeka Celebrations is Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan (Unity is the Pillar of Success )

The boys were equally sporting . They were all dressed up in colourful Baju Melayu and songkok to display their love for MALAYSIA .

On the 25th of July SMK Taman Desa held its annual Co-Curricular day.

This annual event provided excellent opportunities for student to cultivate important skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship and interpersonal communication that would certainly make learning life more meaningful and enjoyable.

The day started off on a fine morning at 7.20a.m. After the speeches were delivered, the fun and entertainment began. There were Taekwando , foot drill and Chinese Yo-Yo demonstrations.

Tossing the Yo-Yo up into the air and catching it again. ....After 6 months of training the forms 1 and 2 students were able to perform some tricks that delighted the audience.

Many staff and students thronged the school compound and canteen which were filled with rows of stalls selling a variety of goodies, local and western delicacies and game stalls.

Yummy.. This is definitely the best root beer float in town.

"Pop corn".... After I have finished my SPM ...I'm going to ...

The Ghost House gave the students the time of their lives as they entered a journey of loud screams which was definitely worth their money.

A day in the line... just to enter the Ghost house...Please make way for me....

The journey through the Mad House was equally a thrilling experience. Students were blindfolded as they entered a maze of obstacles, eerie sounds and water sprays ; making it difficult for them to find their way out.

Finding Nemo...

...Students were allowed to catch as many fish as they possibly could, using only nets made of tissue paper! Obviously it was not an easy feat . Hence, it was no surprise that this stall which was set up by 2 T yielded the highest profit for the day!)

Table Tennis show down organized by the Afternoon Table Tennis Club attracted 150 challengers!

A singing competition was held at the Seroja Sari Hall. Lovely music reached the audience’s ears.

Once again the stall set up by the Crime Prevention club headed by En Saiful, recorded the highest sale for the day.

Congratulations to all who successfully raised a good amount of money for the school and their clubs. The whole experience was undeniably beneficial. We hope it’ll be as fun as this next year with more excitement in the air.

WALKATHON 2008

It is with much anticipation that the PIBG launched a fund-raising project for the school on the 29th of July 2008. The short ceremony was held during the school’s morning assembly and it was attended by the PIBG Chairman, Mr. Chang Kim Loong, AMN, Deputy Chairman, Mr. Koh Swee Hyong and Walkathon Chairman & PIBG Committee-Member, Mr. Wong Koon Choon. The Walkathon will be held on 3oth August 2008 (Saturday).

The PIBG has put in a lot of effort into planning and making this project a success. The objectives of this fund-raising effort are as follows:

1. to fund the installation of CCTVs at strategic locations around the school grounds
2. to build terraced seating places at the school field
3. to build and equip a music room
4. to up-grade the school canteen

The PIBG Committee-Members 2008/2009, along with the Principal, Mr. Gan Peng Kheang & PIBG Advisor of the school, are working very hard to ensure that a substantial amount of money is raised for the purposes above.

In order to encourage the students and staff to raise funds, many attractive prizes will be given away progressively, culminating in the giving away of the grand prizes on the 30th of August 2008.

The grand prizes are for those who reach a collection of RM1,000.00 and above.

First prize : A laptop
Second and third prizes : Hand phones
Fourth, fifth and sixth prizes : MP4s.

Despite the present unfavourable economic climate we hope that the students, staff, alumni and parents alike will take this fund-raising project in the right spirit. Ultimately the money collected will be for the benefit of the students here. Also, let us continue to carry out our social obligations and not deny our students the privilege of learning in a more conducive environment.

Thus, on behalf of the PIBG of SMKTD, we would like to appeal to one and all to procure donations or to dig deep into your pockets and donate for this worthy cause. Thank you for your support and generosity. We will keep you up-dated on the progress of this fund-raising project. Remember, it is more blessed to give than to receive and let us work hand in hand with the PIBG to fulfil our vision.

Drill Competition

On the 19th of July, the cream of the crop of the seven Uniformed Bodies of SMKTD, assembled once again at the school compound for the yearly showdown of the foot drill competition. After months of practicing, synchronising and perfecting their drill sequences, all the teams were ready to showcase their skills

The competition began with the scrupulous inspection of uniforms by the judges.

Next, the presentation of basic and formative drill movements by the individual team.

The competition had a newcomer this year—the Girls’ Brigade.

This year, the Junior Scouts were a more organized and a more mature team.

The highlight of the day was of course the announcement of the results.

The third place … The Boys' Brigade

Last year’s runner-up, the Boys' Brigade put up a spectacular performance. However, they were disappointed as the coveted trophy had eluded them once again and they had to be content with third place .

The runner-up ...The St John's Ambulance Corps

The St. John’s Ambulance Corps, last year’s Champion put up an equally impressive performance. However they faced stiff competition from a very determined Police Cadet Corps

Marching their ways to the judges’ heart….

Yes, the Police Cadet Corps managed to upstage the St. John’s Ambulance Corps and captured the best Platoon trophy. What a sweet victory….The Police Cadet Corps were over the moon… they could hardly believe their ears when the final result was announced.

They provided a magnificent drill maneuvering display as well as an entertaining show using various marching drill sequences.

The Best Commander goes to Cheong Chee Kong of the Police Cadet Corps.

“We have put in many hours of practice to be where we are today,” said the elated commander of Police Cadet, Cheong Chee Kong (5 Sc1) “ It is a team effort. I think we are the only group where every member contributes his ideas to choreograph the drill formations. The competition had taught us the value of teamwork, for without it, those significant achievements would have remained a pipe dream.”

We salute all the participating teams for the superlative performances and Pn Ng Siew Tuan, the Senior Assistant of Co-Curricular Activities deserves a special recognition for spearheading yet another memorable and successful foot drill competition.

Inter-Class Drama Competition

TALENTS UNLIMITED

The curtain drew apart. Silence filled the hall and everyone was attentive as the Form 2 Bayan's students took centre stage.

Aaron Yeoh as Erik the Phantom and Vivien Quek as Christine Daae.

2 Bayan loaded their drama The Phantom of the Opera with entertaining sound effects which drew thunderous applause from audience.

What a brilliant idea - to depict the “Box 5” in the opera house!

To read and understand the play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare was not an easy feat, but 2 Camar were able to go beyond. Our hats’ off to them! Their drama managed to capture the audiences’ attention with a well adapted script and its moving character portrayal by the lead “actor”- Hamlet- played by Carlotta Koh.

Ong Tong as Catherine in Form 2 Enggang’s drama “The Taming of the Shrew: Her performance exuded so much of energy and emotion.

Form 1 Bayan with their very own production How Dalat Got Its Name based on an ingeniously written script - a modernised version of the short story from the Form 1 Literature. These form 1 students were truly a talented bunch - the young and restless ! They were full of the joys of spring!

“The Shares” by 1 Kenari – the last team to sign up for the competition. Despite having little time for planning and practice all the actors and actresses did they best to impress the judges. The managed to have the time of their lives on the stage!

Fantastic acting skills, coupled with stunning costumes, beautifully painted backdrops and creative props received positive responses from the audience ….

The expressions …. said it all

The afternoon session students managed to rock the stage and enthral the audience with their lively and splendid performances. They had the opportunity to display their potentials and many hidden talents, thus, the Theme: Talents Unlimited was most apt.

Congratulations to Forms 2 Bayan, 2 Camar, 2 Enggang, 1 Bayan and 1 Kenari for all your effort and noteworthy performance. The elusive win is not everything but what is more important is the simple lessons garnered from this invaluable experience. Finally, the spirit and teamwork showed by all the participants and their unlimited talents once again had proven that SMKTD can be and will be the Best of the Best!

Special mention must be made of the organizing team lead Pn Nor Zurlita, the Head of English Department, Pn Hannah, the Head of English Panel and her team of English teachers Mr Padmanapan, Pn Sapiah, Ms Rona, Ms Lee, Ms Ho, the trainee teachers Mr Lim and Mr Chai and also to all parents for your support and cooperation in making this competition possible.

Thank your very much for the kind greetings.
The appointment equates to a 'pro bono publico' status that allows civil society representatives to play a role in good governance and transparency of the Local Council.
The philosophy of the state government for a truly multi-racial set-up is a reflection of good politics of moderation and modernisation with social justice is acceptable by me.
I represent a non-political Organisation www.hba.org.my and shall continue to do so in the capacity of the Honorary Secretary-General.
I shall continue with the quest for affordable housing, minimising abandoned housing projects thro' the newly legislated Housing Development (Control & Licensing) Act that formulated the 'Built Then Sell' 10:90 concept; to ensure that the laws in Building & Common Property (Maintenance and Management) Act, 2007 (BCP) is not derailed and to assist the Commissioner of Buildings (COB) in making the BCP work thro' the 'teething problems'. My aim and objective is to rectify the ills of the housing industry, public delivery system and to ensure that MPSJ and the state government attend to issues with promptness in a manner befitting the expectation of the tax payers.

HAPPY 27th BIRTHDAY SMK TAMAN DESA !

27 years ago !

SMK Taman Desa was established on the 5th of January 1981. However, as the new school building was still under construction, it had to be housed temporarily at the Overseas Union Garden Primary School for 5 months and 9 days. On the 15th of June 1981, SMKTD commenced within its own buildings at Taman Desa.

In 1981, the students’ population was about 348 with 9 classes . When the school moved to its own premises there were 412 students with 7 Remove and 3 Form One classes. The school was helmed by the first Principal Drs. Hanapiah Sudin and Senior Assistant, Mr. George F. Menezes .

The New Table Tennis Room

The newly set up table tennis room is a project by Taman Desa Residents’ Association (TDRA) and it has kindly advanced the building cost. TDRA certainly looks forward to SP Setia Bhd’s philanthropic support to cover the building cost, at the upcoming TDRA’s annual Ping Pong Tournament.

This new facility now offers SMKTD’s students a more conducive environment for training Hopefully, with more and better training, they can have a more competitive edge over other schools as well as a better opportunity to emerge as champions in future inter-school table tennis competitions. We are grateful to TDRA and PIBG for their support. Once again thank you TDRA and PIBG for your dedication and commitment to SMKTD.

The New Auditorium

The auditorium is a new school facility initiated by the Principal, Mr Gan Peng Kheang. After securing the initial grant from the PM’s Department, the construction work started in late October 2007 and completed in February . Fixtures and air-conditioning units were funded by generous donors and parents. The multi-purpose auditorium can accommodate about 100 people.

Excellent Teachers Create an Outstanding Nation

Students and teachers gathered once again at the Arena Wira for the school level, Teachers’ day celebration, a day in recognition of the roles and contributions of teachers. Every year in SMKTD, this special day is being celebrated on last day of school, before the Mid-Term break where many students would usually opt to play truant as the exams are over!

However, students from the afternoon session were faithfully present and they were in school even earlier than their normal school hours to celebrate this auspicious day with their teachers.

Teachers adorned in their Sunday best: the ladies were dressed to kill, in colourful and attractive outfits with matching handbags, shoes and accessories .The men wore their smart shirts and some in their mismatching ties (an epitome of teachers in the 60’s J !) while the Malay cikgus were in their best Baju Melayu, looking more like Raja Sehari (bridegroom)!

The Sixth formers were given the honour to organize the day’s event. A number of activities were lined up for students to show their appreciation to all the teachers of SMKTD who had toiled tirelessly to educate them amidst the very challenging educational system. Also, in attendance to make the day more meaningful were the ever proactive and supportive PTA council members led by the Chairman Mr Chang Kim Loong, AMN.

To end the day, teachers were treated to a sumptuous lunch fully sponsored by the PTA!

Yang Berusaha Tn Pengetua SMK Taman Desa, Saudara Gan Peng Kheang, Pen. Kanan: Cik Tee Lee Hwa, Pen. Kanan Hal Ehwal Murid Chin Yoke Mei, Pen. Teachers’ Day is a national occasion where we pay tribute to not only teachers but indeed all those who undertake the tough and often thankless job of educating and developing wholesome characters of hundreds of thousands of young minds of our nation.

Our School system remains good across the board, in that it takes care of children who don’t do well in school. Some of them are from poor families, some of them from broken families & some of them may not be born as talented. It’s a reality; I think we should be realistic and acknowledge it. But at the same time, our attitude should be a positive one; that no matter what the child is like, teachers, parents & individual students make efforts to achieve our educating goals. It is not only the task of teachers to educate, students must want to be educated and parents must take an active role in their children’s education.

The School needs very motivated teachers to do this, people who believe in the mission and who want to achieve it. And I am very heartened with the fact that we have such teachers and we have a school principal whom I know has the mission and passion, and who knows how to go about getting it done.

We have very high expectations and hopes on them and they have high expectations and hopes on themselves. But what we hope from them is not just that they will be able to do well individually but that they will be able to bring the School agenda collectively forward and to fulfil all the hopes that SMKTD aspire ‘KAMI CEMERLANG SMKTD TERBILANG; WE EXCEL SMKTD IS THE BEST OF THE BEST’ They will contribute and they will make others succeed as they have been able to succeed. (Applause)

Recently, YB Dato Seri Hishammuddin, the Minister of Education invited everyone, teachers and PIBG ‘to make their views known on whether the policy to teach Science and Mathematics in English should continue (The Star- Thurs. 15.5.08)’.

‘The views are being sought before a final decision is made after this year’s UPSR results are announced’. The Government has spent RM2.21billion on information and communication technology equipments in the year 2003 to implement the policy of teaching Science and Maths in English. Another RM2.4mil was spent on software, RM317million to train teachers and RM638mil as subject incentives. UPSR results should not be used as a yardstick on the effectiveness of teaching these subjects in English.

First of all, we have to ask ourselves the purpose of our children learning Science and Maths. The answer is we want them to excel at tertiary level and to compete on a global/ international platform not on a ‘jaguh kampong’. Maths and Science (Modern Maths, Add Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics) are dynamic subjects and not easy subjects to learn and master. So, why make it more difficult for our children to learn in a medium that is not internationally available.

The Education dpt must surely realize our students’ dependency on electronic and printed dictionaries just to read their textbooks. We should produce an atmosphere where students could do research and access information on the internet The Ministry should stop gambling with the children future and not change at the whims and fancies ( with political undertone). With the Ministry doubling its efforts to improve the teaching English, it is our vehement, honest and sincere view that Science and Maths should remain to be taught is English (period). Do not dilute the importance of English.

Although every day of school is Teachers’ day, we pause for one day in a year to make it special. Eventfully, teachers who play a role in students’ live, will be well remembered by students long after they have finished schooling and entered working life. Who doesn’t remember even one teacher from their school? That’s what outstanding teachers will be, the guiding star for adults of the future.

Just as a country is as good as its people, so its students are only as good as their teachers. Therefore a great deal depends on you, the Teachers and I salute you, all of you, those here today, and many more who are not here, for your passion, dedication, commitment and contributions. Thank you very much for making a difference to our children and to the future of our country. And keep it up, we expect even more from you. Happy Teachers’ Day!

May God take care of the teachers irrespective of religion, race or creed and let SMK (Taman Desa) be a School to promote tolerance and acceptance in this multi-racial country.

Table Tennis Tournament

The table tennis tournament organized by the Afternoon Table Tennis Club, on the 23rd and 30th of April received overwhelming response. It aimed to give students some fun whilst scouting and recruiting new talents for the school team. Surprisingly there were a larger pool of potentials than expected; which augured well for the future!

However, the talents and enthusiasm in these potentials need to be complemented with professional coaching and instructions, otherwise these budding talents will go to waste.

VISION POSSIBLE

One of the key projects of Rotary Club of Danau Desa (RCDD) is aimed towards the urban poor children. Heeding the Ministry of Education’s call, RCDD is embarking to prescribe spectacles for 100 deserving students in their 'Vision Possible' theme.

The event kicked off at Seroja Hall, SMK Taman Desa this morning in conjunction with the school’s Minggu Kesihatan – Health Week. Mr. Yeap, the school counsellor, had identified 100 deserving poor students.

Mega Optics Sdn Bhd sent three of its staff, together with their equipment to test the students' eyes.

RCDD also brought along 200 pairs of spectacles for the students to choose.

PIBG SMKTD thank Rotary Club of Danau Desa for having chosen SMKTD to be the forerunner of this program ‘Vision Possible’. Thanks too are extended to the kind members and volunteers of Rotary Club, the participating Optimist, their staff and the School Principal and the participating teachers.
It is good and thoughtful undertaking to reflect society cares for our young. With proper sight, students will have the comfort and confidence; thus would be able to study more attentively. The theme ‘Vision Possible’ is a good theme; to make things happen for the right reasons and to complement the PIBG program to assist marginalized students. Making that little difference that may impact the rest of the child’s life with a clearer and sharper world; achieving self-esteem and confidence, hence their learning capabilities, is reflective of the PIBG that cares.
It is my humble wish that this ‘affair’ would continue on a yearly basis to benefit the next batch of students. The attitude of parents/ guardian/ students who can’t afford, delay the necessity to wear glasses must change for the better rather than allow ones eyes to deteriorate.

Celebrating Excellence

Taman Desa Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur - 28th Excellent Award Day - Hari Anugerah Cemerlang -2008

It was a day specially designated to recognize the achievements of students who had done exceptionally well in the academics.

Before the the excellent award ceremony, the PTA Annual General Meeting was also held to inform parents of the work and activities undertaken by the PTA over the past year and to account for the monies spent and received. Mr Chang Kim Loong, AMN and Mr Koh Swee Hyong had been reelected as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively for another term. Thank you Mr Chairman and all the committee for making many valuable contributions last year.

After the AGM, the Guest-of- Honour, the Chairman of the PTA, Mr. Chang Kim Loong ,AMN launched the 28th Excellent Award Day by “breaking the ice” .

Mr Chang gave a speech (scroll below to read the full text) followed by Mr Gan Peng Kheang, the Principal, who then presented a report on the school’s academic and extra-curricular performance in 2007 /2008.

The 2007 SPM and STPM results demonstrated SMKTD’s students’ capabilities and teachers’ commitment to strive for excellence. SMKTD received three special awards from the KL Education Department . With this outstanding achievement, SMK Taman Desa is moving closer to its vision of becoming the premier school in Bangsar Zone.

The Best Overall Student for PMR 2007 was awarded to Ew Gene Wern who achieved 8 As. The Best Overall Student for SPM 2007 (Science Stream) was awarded to Nadiah Jaffar who achieved 11A1s while the Best Overall Student for SPM 2007 (Art Stream) was awarded to Mohammed Yusof Rasheed who achieved 5A1s and 4A2s. For STPM, the Best Student Award went to Aw Yong Chor Leong who scored an outstanding PNGK of 4.00. The last award of the day, Anugerah Khas Pengetua 2008 went to Tan Weng Kiat for his active involvement in co-curricular activities as well as outstanding SPM results.

performed a patriotic song, “Malaysia Tanah Airku”, “What I’ve Been Looking For” which one could recognize from the hit movie, High School Musical and “Lion Sleeps Tonight” which was presented with entertaining and well choreographed movement . What a great way to end a great day!

1. How did you manage to get such outstanding results?
I balanced my time well between studying and playing badminton.

2 Did you expect it?
I think so .

3 How did you prepare for SPM?
I always pay attention to my teachers in class and I did a lot of revision exercises.

4 What are your feelings being one of the top students of SMKTD?
Very happy and thankful.

5 What’s your plan for the future?
I’ll be doing a foundation course in Engineering at Nottingham University

6 What’s your advice to SMKTD's students?
Study consistently and at the same time have some time for recreational activities.

7 To whom do you owe your success?
To all my teachers in SMKTD and also to my parents for their support in whatever I do.

An interview with Nadiah bt Jaffar SPM 2007 top-scorer.

1. What was your reaction when you first got your results?
I was very shocked! ..haha..didn't expect that at all..but i did try my best and i was hoping for the best too. So,i'm very thankful to God for what He has given me.

2. Please share with us your secret, how did you mange to get such good results?
Um..well..i guess i don't have any secrets..

3. How did you prepare for SPM?
Hmm..I tried to be consistent in my studies because last minute studying will crack me up..haha..have done that.. And I went for tuitions..I didn't manage to go for any seminars though..but i tried to get as much information from my friends who attended the seminars.

4. Many say that sudying is stressful. How do you cope with it?
It'll be stressful if you think of studying as a task..but if you learn to love what you do,there should be no problem coping with it.

5. What's your plan for the future? What's your ambition and how do you plan to achieve it?

Well,right now I'm just applying for as many scholarships as possible..hehe.. I do have a dream of becoming a pediatrician,but it's all up to where life puts me..sometimes you don't always get what you want,so you have to love whatever that you're doing!

6 What’s your advice to SMKTD's students?
Desarians rule!!..haha..hmm..advice..well, study smart.

7 To whom do you owe your success?
First of all, I'm very thankful to God and all the teachers who have taught me..they helped me A LOT as well as believing in me. "Terima kasih Cikgu!" ..and also my parents who have supported me all the way.. Last but not least, to all my friends for putting up with me whenever I was down and for sharing their knowledge with me.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all parents who have taken time from your busy schedules to attend this AGM. This shows that you care. Your presence here give us hope that together, Parents, Teachers and the PIBG will forge a stronger bond in developing your child's education and knowledge.

In the present day alma maters, it is beyond a shadow of doubt that the role of the PIBG (Parents-Teachers Association) cannot be undermined. The PIBG plays a vital role in ensuring that students achieve their fullest potential and excel in the various fields. During my tenor as the PIBG Chairman of SMKTD, I am indeed proud to say that I have witnessed a greater interaction and involvement of the PIBG in assisting the school administrators, teachers and non-teaching staff in realizing the vision of the school.
Last year had indeed been a challenging one for the PIBG committee as it embarked on a major project to build the Arena Wira, which now serves as a multi-purpose hall. Individuals and organizations rallied around the PIBG and we had the financial as well as moral support to spur us ahead. I would like to sincerely thank my excellent and hardworking committee members in making this project a reality. I take this opportunity to also urge other PIBG members to step forward and render your services for the betterment of SMKTD. Do play a more vibrant role in the school through the PIBG. This is the platform for you to voice your opinions, give constructive feedback and keep tabs on the progress and well-being of your children.
Parents and Teachers
The achievements of the students in this school speak volumes of the tremendous dedication of its administrators and teaching staff. Kudos to the school for having received three (3) awards “ Anugerah Pencapaian SPM Terbaik 2007 and certificates of appreciation from Education Department WP Kuala Lumpur when the SPM 2007 results were announced recently. The Awards and certificates were for achieving the highest percentages of As for the subjects of Science, Additional Mathematics and Physics. To the students and dedicated teachers: my salute to all of you. This School is ‘no-push over’. Three (3) Awards in one single year is an accomplishment. Can you imagine that we are better then the established St John Institution, Victoria Institution, Methodist Boys Sch. Well done, indeed!

We have a student in our School who has scored 11 straight A1s in the SPM. She is Cik Nadia Jaffar, daughter of our fellow PIBG council member, En Jaffar Sidek. If time permits, we will invite him to give us a brief talk on his ‘methods’/ recipe in bringing/ cooking up such a high-achiever daughter.
As parents and guardians, I hope that we will be actively involved not only in monitoring our children’s academic progress but also their behaviour, their company of friends and their whereabouts. In the light of a recent disturbing case, where an 11-year-old La Salle Brickfields (2) primary school boy, was reported missing, it has been found that the pupil concerned had played truant from school for 79 days last year without the knowledge of his parents. Sad to say I have personally witnessed parents/guardians of SMKTD leaving their children at the main school gate; students seemingly went into the School compound but quickly walked away the very next minute to head for the nearby cybercafés or to hang around with undesirable company. These students were clearly playing truant and cheating on their unsuspecting parents. Fellow parents and guardians, let us nip this problem in the bud before it gets out of hand. Do be sensitive to the emotional needs of your children. Call the school’s direct line to the staff room (03–7981 8462) to speak to your children’s teachers.
Parents andn Teachers
Discipline plays an integral role in moulding our children’s character and behaviour. A number of our students here come from broken homes. If a sense of discipline and proper guidance is not instilled in these youngsters, many of them will be exploited by the unscrupulous and be led astray. The out-going PIBG committee members had carried out a pilot project to reach out to these students. Suffice to say that through this project we have identified many students who lack parental guidance and are rebellious. Cultivate and instill a sense of discipline in your children. I urge you to play a more active role in this area.
Once again I would like to sincerely thank all the out-going PIBG committee members for their co-operation, time and energy in helping the school to achieve its various aims and objectives. We are truly blessed to have had this very special group of people constantly working for the betterment of the school.

Kejohanan Olahraga - SMK Taman Desa's Sports Day - 2008
The day kicked off with the traditional march past led by the of Boys’ Brigade Band.

Smartly dressed students from the various Uniform Bodies putting their best foot forward to impress the judges.

Students representing the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green Sports Houses in colourful traditional costumes, interesting heargears, creative banners and mascots marched into the field.

House Captains taking the oath led by the Head Prefect….to participate in the events in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The school Principal Mr Gan Peng Kheang gave a short speech followed by the PTA Chairman Mr Chang Kim Loong,AMN and the day's sprinting events started off with a big “bang" !

The performance by the lion dance troupe led by Kok Fai and his friends added fun to the occasion.

One, two, three ... one, two three ... The "Young and Restless" Forms one and two students mesmerized the crowd with their highly enegetic aerobic workout/senamrobik.

Sponsor-a-tree programme

On the 29th of January, OPUS Group Bhd carried out the “ Sponsor -A- tree- Programme” at SMK TAMAN DESA as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility drive.

OPUS contributed approximately 65 plants of various species to help creating a more beautiful school compound and most importantly it aimed to show its commitment to protect and preserve the God-given "Mother Nature"- our environment.

Students were also reminded on the importance of being environmentally conscious individuals.

OPUS' employees also contributed RM2,0000 to school’s new auditorium building fund.

Thank you parents and students for making SMKTD your preferred choice. We trust that with the continue support of the PTA, spearheaded by Mr Chang Kim Loong, AMN, and dedicated teachers and supportive parents, SMK TD is set to propel to greater heights in 2008!

Selamat Pagi dan Selamat Sejahtera kepada semua yang hadir pada pagi ini sempena Hari Orientasi Pelajar Baru 2008.

Saya amat berbesar hati dan bangga dijemput menghadiri serta memberi sepatah-dua kata kepada para ibu-bapa dan murid-murid yang hadir. On behalf of the Principal and his staff and on behalf of the Board of Parents-Teachers Assoc, I warmly welcome the new students to this School. Equally warmly I welcome parents and guardians who have come along to accompany their children to this Orientation Day.

While this orientation is primarily for our new students, in a way it may also serve as the first "parent conference" with all the parents in the audience.

Parents and guardians, I acknowledge your multitude of emotions: Excitement … Anxiety … Fear … Anticipation … For many of you parents, lessening the apprehensions of your 'secondary school' going children is not the easiest of tasks, since you yourselves are full of apprehension about this new horizon and about what lies ahead for your daughters and sons. I understand this from my own experience as a parent for my four (4) school going children.

For Students, this is where your journey to secondary education starts. You have five (5) sacred years ahead of you. For those academically selected ones to go to Form Six; there are two (2) more extra years. Now is the time to abandon your mirror and look outward. Allow the people you live with in community — your elder, your parents and your teachers — to challenge you, to guide you, to aid your growth.

Students ask yourself - How can you get the most out of your time here? As hard as it may be to imagine, in less than 3 years, you will be sitting for PMR and in less than 5 years, most of you will be sitting for your SPM examinations. This School and its teachers have an important goal in helping you in this quest. To cultivate a caring, intelligent and honest student to becoming a responsible citizen.

“Sepatah-dua kata’ – No, I have more to say that just one or two words.

But I give this advice:

Firstly, brush up quickly on our national language- “Bahasa Malaysia”. Most of you have come from a Chinese language medium school, it is important that you learn and learn quickly on the Bahasa Malaysia to be able to catch up with your peers. Of course, you should not forget the importance of English language and your mother tongue (ie Mandarin and Tamil). This is a hard task to do but being in a national school it is compulsory to study in Bahasa Malaysia. You should not complain about the extra work as it is to your own advantage at the end of the day.

Secondly, whilst school education is important, there are other learning stuff that are equally important. Good manners, good social behaviour, caring, civic consciousness and being considerate. These are the attributes you learn through observation and practice. Lots of practice, mind you…. What do you do when you pass by your teachers or even teachers who don't teach you? Do you avert your eyes or just walk pass by them like they are not there? Smile or say a word of greeting. Same when you see parents of your friends or PIBG members. Practise saying "thank you' everytime someone does something for you. This is a school community which all of you would be in for the next few years. Make the best of it with good manners.

Thirdly, if you want to do something well, you have to do it with energy, attentively and passion. For example, after a speech by someone, no matter how long winded it is, you must learn to clap in appreciation. Similarly, if you have homework or research to do, do it promptly with energy, passion and give it your best.

Fourthly, do not be afraid to ask questions. Respect your teachers but do not be afraid to ask questions or seek answers to questions that you do not know. If your teacher do not know, ask your Head of all Teachers, your Principal.

Fifthly, while educating yourself, don't forget that other activities in school are equally important. Participate in them whole heartedly and give your support to your school whenever events are held. If you cannot be the runner in a sport event, then be the cheer leader.

Presently, there is a serious concern over school dropout rate that has been reported in the newspapers. Poor academic performance, loss of interest in studies and broken homes are the main causes of this epidemic. The School and PIBG will work together to tackle and attempt to curd this silent epidemic immediately.

The Board of PIBG takes a serious view of the importance to emphasis Education as a key tool to fight ignorance and prejudice. It also instill leadership based on good principles and values( both family and school ) and the role of teachers to cultivate honest and caring students to become responsible citizens.

A Salute to our beloved Afternoon Supervisor, Mr Long Ah Kew !
After 31 years of service, Mr Long retired as the Afternoon Supervisor of SMK Taman Desa on the 8th of October 2007. Yes, SMKTD is losing yet another highly respected and very dedicated teacher! ( Mr Chan Beng Tuan, Mr Woo Choon and Pn Yap Kwee Chee had all retired this year! )

Mr Long has served faithfully in SMKTD for 22 years 2 months and 23 days!

"Thank you Mr Long, for all your contributions to SMKTD," Mr Chang Kim Loong , AMN, Chairman of PIBG

"Your leadership, dedication and strong commitment to your job are highly commendable!" Mr Gan Peng Kheang, Principal of SMK Taman Desa.

At the special farewell assembly, a number of programmes were specially lined up by the teachers and students to honour and show appreciation to Mr Long for his excellent and tireless contributions to the school.

A word from the Head Prefect for Afternoon Session 2007

For the past 2 decades, Mr Long has been an exemplary figure in terms of being an educationist and a leader to his peers. And for all the years that he has been serving in SMK Taman Desa, Mr Long has brought about many positive changes to the school.

When he was the academic teacher for the Moral Education and Bahasa Melayu subjects, the percentage of passes kept improving. During his stint as the basketball and volleyball teacher advisor our school became champions for the Bangsar Zone repeatedly. Mr Long was also the teacher advisor for the Red Crescent Society and the Red House.

From the years 1987-2003, Mr Long was the Head Disciplinarian as well as the Panel Head for Moral Education. During his time as the head disciplinarian, his ability to discipline students was unmatched.
The most obvious contribution of Mr Long’s was the Silver Jubilee fund raising Carnival cum Dinner last year. Mr Long as the coordinator , with the help and full support of our dedicated Parent-Teacher Association , the Carnival cum Dinner was a tremendous success which had subsequently brought about many changes to our school facilities and infra-structure, such as the metal deck roofing between blocks F and G of the school.

It is not just the physical contributions that Mr Long is responsible for, he has always been the driving force of educating the younger generation. If you ask any of his former students, they will all tell you the same thing, under all that serious and stern façade is a teacher who understands his subject matter expertly and also one who can show you the sunny side of life as well. He is indeed a great teacher, not only to his students, but to all the other teachers as well.

Mr Long, you will be missed by everyone in this school. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you well on behalf of all the afternoon session students. May your future endeavours bring you contentment and joy. Happy retirement Mr Long and God bless.

The launching of Arena Wira !

A milestone to remember !
The 50th Merdeka and Mooncake Festival Charity Dinner held on the 23rd September 2007 was a very significant occasion for SMK Taman Desa. It was an event like no other in the school’s history!

The Taman Desa Residents’ Association(TDRA) and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SMK Taman Desa jointly organized this momentous event to celebrate the nation’s 50th birthday as well as the Lunar Calendar’s Mooncake Festival. This joyous occasion not only fostered goodwill in the neighbourhood but had also managed to raise funds for the school’s Metal Deck Roof Project.

Taman Desa folks turned up in full force to give their support.

It was the first ever Charity Dinner of this magnitude with over a hundred tables, held in the school compound.

Lighted lanterns strung around the school compound brightened up the occasion.

Following the fund raising Silver Jubilee Carnival cum Dinner last year, the PTA and the school board had successfully carried out two large projects. Firstly, the school library had been given a ‘face lift” with a new Automated Card System. The other project was the installation of the PA System around the entire school.

The PTA went on with their target of completing a metal deck roofing between blocks F and G of the school. However, the cost of the roof exceeded the funds the PTA had. During this period, TDRA graciously lent support to the school by organizing the aforementioned charity dinner. SP Setia Berhad Group also came forward with a philanthropic gesture by donating RM 50,000.00, to pave way for the completion of the metal deck roof and a new stage for the school.

The Chairman of PTA, Mr Chang Kim Loong AMN, welcomed and thanked everyone for attending the Charity Dinner.

The hall aptly named Arena Wira was unveiled ...

...with pomp and grandeur! The stage was bathed with glittering confetti !!!

Also present at the event were distinguished guests of honour , Captain (R) Liew Siong Sing with his wife, Mrs Liew of the S.P. Setia Berhad Group and Member of Parliament for Seputeh, YB Teresa Kok.

Indeed, the PTA has accomplished a mammoth task. The school now can proudly boast of a main hall where students and teachers of both sessions can converge for all school functions and activities.

Let us all, the students and teachers of SMKTD take up the challenge to go beyond the marks of success and ultimately to realise the school’s vision and aspiration -to be the Premier School in Bangsar Zone.

YB Teresa Kok, MP Seputeh Consituency, Yg Berbahagia Capt Liew Siong Sing bagi pihak SP Setia group, Saudara Lee Seng Chai, President of TDRA, Saudara William Chan, Organising Chairman, Saudara Gan Peng Kheang, Pengetua SMK Taman Desa, Dato-Dato, Datin-Datin, Honourable Guests, Ladies & Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Parents-Teachers Association SMK Taman Desa, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you to this joint TDRA-PIBG Charity Dinner in conjunction with the 50th Merdeka Anniversary and the Moon Cake Festival.

It is heartening to see so many of you this Sunday evening. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your response to TDRA-PIBG’s call by attending this function. Your presence demonstrates your strong commitment to community service as well as student/ children welfare. I am extremely delighted that TDRA, headed by Saudara Lee Seng Chai has chosen our School to hold the current function and am particularly thankful to my Deputy Chairman Mr Koh Swee Hyong and Mr Lim Poh Huu, our PTA council member who are both office bearers in TDRA and our PIBG. Kudos too, to our strongman, Mr Kenneth Gordan Ng for his diligence in ensuring that the construction of our brand new “Metal Deck Roof’ and the performance stage is ready for today’s function. It is ready and we are here today because of all of you who have put in your sweat, time and skill and money to make it happen.

This year marks the 50th year of national independence, a half-century of self-rule. Since Merdeka we have been able to exercise our own political destiny, through our own elected members in Parliament. Independence does give rise to high expectations. While some are thoroughly happy and satisfied with Malaysian democracy, others are not. But we are not here to take about politics.

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Tonight, we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival aka Moon Cake Festival. For us in Malaysia, it has become a major festival particularly for Chinese – when family members seek to enjoy the full moon - an auspicious symbol of abundance, harmony and luck.

In multi-racial, multi-cultural Malaysia, we have a range of traditions, festivals, and rituals all round the year. For us these festivals and rituals go beyond the superficial. They are part of our rich heritage, and remain deep in our values; irrespective of religion, race or creed. Often old traditions, customs and festivals assume new meanings and new symbolism over time. We hope it will be so, always. They still flourish today because many among the older generation have persisted in seeking to preserve and sustain them as part of our culture and heritage.

We need to ask ourselves how these festivals and traditions can be sustained in the future. To avoid our young becoming skeptical and critical, we need to make these festivals and their significance in value-terms intelligible to them. Otherwise, views that festivals and rituals are superstitious nonsense will acquire greater currency. With time they would end up in being done away with. Such a development will be a great loss for Malaysia.

Festivals, like the Moon-Cake Festival, have become occasions to get together to renew family ties and friendships. This alone is reason enough for us to continue celebrating them. We observe them today because they anchor us to our past as well as link our children to us.

Ladies & Gentlemen

The School academic performance has enjoyed a progressive chart with the aim to achieve the vision of “BERHASRAT UNTUK MENJADI SEKOLAH TERPILIH DALAM ZON BANGSAR”. Last year had been a fruitful year for the School. The School excels in both academic performances and the extra mural activities. On the academic front, the School has achieved significant improvements in the three (3) public examinations ie PMR, SPM and STPM. Last year, we had the good fortune of a student having 12 straight A1s and his proud father is amongst us this evening.

Most of the students of this School comes from primary schools of Taman Desa, Kuen Cheng, Yoke Nam, Choong Wen and they are good students. The PIBG will continue to strive for all the students' well being.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr Gan Peng Kheang (School Principal) and the Teachers who have volunteered to be here today. A ‘Big Thank You’ to Mr Chan Beng Tuan, the just retired Principal; Mr Christie Daniels, the immediate past Chairman of the School PTA; the Chinese Orchestra, The Boys’ Brigade, Line Dancers and the Chinese Choir of TDRA. Aspiring singers from the School will be entertaining us with their songs in Chinese and English. Lets’ give them a round of applauds for these brave students.

There are also young volunteers from TDRA who have come to help out tonight. We are appreciative of people who know how to make volunteering part of their life.To all Chinese Malaysian, may I wish you a very joyous Mid-Autumn Festival. And to all Malaysian, Selamat mengambut 50 tahun Merdeka.

Metal Deck Arch

When the school re-opened on the 27th of August after the mid-semester break, a lot of “oos.. and ahs…” were heard. Teachers and students were amazed when they cast their eyes for the first time on the newly completed metal deck arch between Block F and G of the school buildings.

So fast...amazing !!!

Before the 18th of August 2007...

Utilising the state of art technology, the construction of the metal deck arch was completed in 9 days!
The construction work began...

A truss is the static (blue) structure consisting of straight slender members inter-connected at joints into triangular units. The metal deck arch structure also includes the following: purlins, rafters (roof joists) , beams and girders.

A hydraulic crane in action -lifting the truss weighing about 1500kg to be fixed to the columns.

A total of 12 workers were involved in the construction work.

A hole was drilled for PVC pipes to channel water collected on the rooftop, down the drain.

Rain or shine, all activities under the metal-deck arch are now possible.

A mammoth effort by the PTA and the school
The funds collected from last year’s Silver Jubilee Celebration and the various Fund-Raising activities undertaken by the school and PTA have made this project a reality. We are immensely grateful to the PTA Chairman, Mr Chang Kim Loong (AMN) and the all the dedicated council members, parents and generous donors for their relentless effort and support. Once again the History Panel of SMK Taman Desa was responsible for organizing various activities for students to show their love for the country.

A fashion show organized by the Form 2 students, kicked off the month long celebration.

In Muhibah spirit......Malay, Indian and Chinese students dressed in splendid traditional costumes.

Patriotic Song Contest
7th of September marked yet another memorable event for SMK Taman Desa especially for the afternoon session students and teachers. Immediately after the bell rang signaling the end of recess, a buzz of excitement began as it was time for the Patriotic Song Contest.

The Patriotic Song Contest is usually a singing competition where one class stands above all the rest in terms of delivery of the song. This year, however, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many new talents emerging from the afternoon session classes. Clearly the judges had a difficult time to deliberate on which class would be the eventual winner, as the students put on a spectacular show to out do the rival classes.
The first class to take the stage was 1 Bayan...

... soothed the audience with the song entitled Putra Putri.

The class of academically inclined students showed that they too could do well in other areas besides studying. Their rendition of Putra Putri was sweet and it was evident they had put in a lot of effort from the way they presented the song. The class even went as far as to find real hibiscus to brighten up their attire for the day. The girls pinned it to their ears and the boys put it on their pockets. The accompanying pianist, Dillon Tan did his best under pressure. and the choir was led by an able conductress, Aw Yong Poi Yi.

1 Camar were up next with a special song that the class had come up with all on their own. From the get go, this second class in Form One was clearly second to none. The class “Mozart” Joycelin Lee, played with such enthusiasm and passion that everyone present was awed by her. The class belted out an original song -Malaysia Berjaya, showing their creativity. They even had...

It was rather apt when they waved the Malaysian flag at the end and chorused “Merdeka” three times at the end of their performance. Kudos to 1 Camar for their incredible performance! They would be a hard act to follow.

The next class up was also not to be outdone,1 Enggang led by Carlotta , Jayson and Qi Rui, the conductress.

Demi Negara...tercinta...

They showed plenty of originality and spirit as well. They had only heard the song "Setia" once and the class worked well together to give thier best. At the end of their song, it was clear that the audience was impressed with their performance as well.

When the Form Ones were done with their singing, their seniors took centre stage. They clearly did not want to relinquish the coveted title that had been in the second formers possession every single year. It has been a tradition that the best class in Form Two always won this particular competition. 2S was not about to let it go without a fight.

They came out will all their guns blazing. They had a pianist, two able guitarists, a drummer and a very manic conductor! 2S sang very well and their performance seemed seamless. When they finally took their bow, the teachers knew that they had lived up to the ...

2S fame.

Malaysiaku gemilang...

The second form two , 2E, was equally focused to try to win the competition. They also had two guitarists and they sang very sweetly. The class showed that they had musical talent as well because they had divided the class into different parts. There were alto, soprano and baritone parts of the choir. 2 E

Hannah, their monitor led the class well with her graceful movements as conductress.
When the third class took to the stage, the teachers and students alike were treated to a very talented group of students.

...sang the same song as 2S but it was clear that Julian Lee and Jullya Chen were far better guitarists. The boys and girls of 2K worked very well together incorporating movements with their singing. They even had a surprise in store for the audience.

Towards the end of their song, they let out a small sparrow to signify independence. When the bird flew out amidst the choir, everyone oohed and ahhed about the bird. It was truly a sight to behold!

A strong spirit of patriotism

Who knew we had such talented students? And at such a young age. SMK Taman Desa is clearly blessed to have such spirited students with the drive to win. The Patriotic Song contest was clearly successful because it showed that the students really took time and effort to display the strong spirit of patriotism by doing the best that they could and that they were able to work together as a unit. It is evident that our students will be able to cope well with the challenges in their future as they are able to be team players and can come up with something so spectacular in such a short period of time. It was truly a proud moment for all the teachers that day! Thank you, boys and girls of the afternoon session.

Volleyball Clinic

Program Pembangunan Sukan Bola Tampar Zon Bangsar 2007.
SMKTD with the sponsorship from the sports section department of the Education Department of KL Federal Territory managed to hold a Volleyball Clinic for students aged below 14 and below 16 on Saturday morning. This is the second year, SMK Taman Desa has been given the privilege to hold such an event.
A total of seven schools from around Bangsar Zone registered for the clinic.
Six coaches were hired to conduct the clinic.

The coaches...

Two of the coaches were ex-national players and the other four were state/university players. The coaches were friendly and went about their business imparting valuable skills and expertise to the students.

The students were divided into five stations and after every half an hour, a siren was sounded to signal the change of stations.

The first station was at the basketball court. The students learnt the service motions there under the able tutelage of Mr Kok Hock Moon.

The second station was dedicated to learning the bump-pass or digging. The coach handling the second station was none other than the experienced Mr Ooi Loon Wei who had previously coached the Under 15 Boys’ Team of SMK Taman Desa to Zone Victory last year. He was also responsible for the boys getting third overall in the Inter-Zone level this year.

In the second station, students learnt how to move their feet and execute the proper bump pass with control and precision. Some students soon got the hang of it and were digging the volleyball with ease.

In the third station, the participants learnt setting. The coach in charge of this station was Mr Kamal Suffian. In no time at all, many of the students were setting the balls back and forth towards each other.

The fourth and fifth stations were held at the volleyball court. Here, Mr Lee Khang Yee with the help of SMKTD’s current captain of the under 18 Boys’ Volleyball Team, Lim Jia Wei, students were thought how to execute attack.

Spiking...

...is the hardest of the skills to master in volleyball, and many found it difficult to find the correct tempo, but the coach made it look so easy.

Placing

On the opposite side of the court, two sisters Miss Luk Teck Hua and Miss Luk Teck Eng both who are ex-national players were put in charge of the station for mastering the art of blocking.

Blocking...

is a defensive move and is an integral part of the game. This last station saw the sisters teaching the students how to make a block and be mentally ready should the occasion rise.

All the coaches were articulate and professional. The students showed interest and cooperation. Throughout the clinic it was clearly obvious that the students were in awe of the coaches.

The teacher advisors who came also showed support by helping out with the distribution of food for students and the general discipline of participants. In a nutshell the clinic was a success as the students learnt a lot and best of all they had fun doing it.

Sunday morning and the time - 0800!

When most teenagers would still be tucked comfortably in their beds, this group of football enthusiasts were already up, and chose to be in the field preparing themselves for the football competition!
The players in action- so much of enthusiasm...

Although they were shown early exit at the competition, their zeal is commendable. They lacked the skills, techniques and teamwork. With more practice, proper guidance and coaching, one day they will be able to step on the winners’ rostrum.

The Co-curriculum day is an annual event.
Students from all the different clubs and societies had a chance to exhibit their entrepreneur skills.

The school canteen had been transformed into a bustling bazaar selling a variety of mouth watering, irresistible and delicious local delights as well as western food.

Wow, look at the crowd! The Bubble Milk drink was selling like hot cakes!

200 pieces of hot-dog in buns topped with special sauce (Ms Liew’s secret recipe) were snapped out as quickly as they could be served!

Satay! Satay! 2 for 1 token with cucumber and ketupat! Cheap and delicious!
2,500 sticks of satays were also sold out in less than 3 hours!!!

The stall set up by the Crime Prevention club headed by En Saiful, recorded the highest sale fo the day.

SMKTD'S best badminton player, put aside his racket to fry Ice-cream!

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

There were also games of all imaginable kinds to keep everyone challenged and thrilled!

Yes, the Uniform Bodies Drill Competition is back!

Six teams assembled once again at the school compound this morning to battle out in the competition. After months of preparations, training and fine-tuning all the six uniform bodies were all geared up to display their drill movements.

Last year’s runner-up ,the Police Cadet were a disappointed lot when they were called. Despite having put up a magnificent and nearly flawless displayed, the champion trophy had eluded them once again.

The Boys’ Brigade ,the crowd 's favourite and last year champion could not defend their title. Although they were equally impressive in their performance they were given a stunning surprise when the eventual winner was announced.

They were the champion in the march past competition in this year Sports Day. They did it again today. In a twenty minute, near perfect performance, the St John’s crushed the other teams’ dreams of lifting the coveted trophy.

From their performance one could not help but marvelled at how they could have memorized and perfected so many complex steps in the twenty minute performance.

It was indeed heartening to see so many form one students taking part in the competition. Even though they did not win, there was nothing amateur about their sportsmanship. They had shown so much passion and enthusiasm. It augurs well for the future of the SMKTD’s uniform bodies. With proper training and guidance, they can be the best in the very near future!

Literature Came Alive

TALENTS-UNLEASHED !!!
The Form 4 Inter-class English Play competition was held on the 10th of July. It was organized by the English Department in conjunction with the Curriculum Week.

Once again SMKTD’s students have proven that, with their enthusiasm and hard work they can be the best of the best.
With a mere one week of planning and practising the 4th formers managed to rock the stage and enthral the audience with their lively and splendid performances.

Their very own productions were adaptations of short stories and poems from the Form 4 Literature text. Some groups had loaded their plays with comical scenes while others gave theirs a local flavour.

Fantastic acting skills....

...coupled with stunning costumes, creative props and "theatrical"sound effects drew thunderous applause from the audience.

Students' artistic capabilities and talents were unleashed – composing stories and dialogues, designing the props, directing the play, dancing, dramatising, narrating and etc… etc…

SMKTD have such a wealth of talents!

Happy Teachers' Day & Goodbye Pn.Yap

25th of May 2007 was another day of great significance for SMKTD. It was the school level Teacher’s Day celebration; a day set aside for students to express their appreciation and love for their teachers and also a day for teachers to forget austerity for once.

It was also a day that marked a milestone in the life of Mdm Yap K.C. After about thirty years of service Pn Yap retired as the Senior Assistant of Student Affairs of SMK Taman Desa.

Pn. Yap’s dedication, high work ethics and commitment to her job is totally unquestionable! The school is losing yet another great teacher. (The 8th Principal, Mr Chan Beng Tuan and Mr Woo Choon retired on the 8th of April and 10th of May respectively.)

The ever supportive Counsel Members of PTA joined the staff and students at the celebration.

The Prefects and Six Formers had done an excellent job in organizing the dual objectives celebration. Teachers and our Guest of Honour, Pn Yap, were treated to a variety of performances : there was a slide show showcasing the teaching career of Pn. Yap, poems recitation, choir...

and also a special song presentation by the teachers (the students were tickled pink by the teachers’ performance)

and finally the teachers had a chance to put their physical strength into test : teachers vs students netball match.

The celebration would not be complete without food, yes, glorious food! Teachers were treated to a sumptuous lunch fully sponsored by the PTA at a local hotel. (Thank you Mr Chairman and all the members of PTA).

Although Teachers’ Day come and go each year, the aim of the celebration remains in the hearts of the students that is to show constant appreciation towards the teachers for their dedication and hard work. Teachers are like pillars to the nation’s education system, the foundation of a knowledgeable society, for without them, who are we? Therefore, to our beloved teachers, we express our heartfelt gratitude for all that you have done for the betterment of our lives and as for Pn Yap and Mr Woo, thank you for all your contributions to SMKTD and may good health, peace and joy be with you as you journey on.

UNSUNG HEROES OF SMKTD

In the recent MSSMKL Bangsar Zone and Inter-Zone Volleyball Tournament, the SMKTD’s volleyball teams (the Under 18 boys and girls and the Under 15 boys and girls) have again brought honours to the school.

SMKTD has always been a school with a proud volleyball tradition.

Although the Champions medals have eluded SMKTD at the recent tournaments, overall, the teams have managed to be consistently competitive as shown in the results they have attained over the last few years. SMKTD has managed to win the respect and admiration of its opponents with its performances .

The Under 18 girls' team: MSSMKL Bangsar Zone- Runner-Up

The Under-18 girls' team ended up the bridesmaid again losing only to SM Kuen Cheng in the final for the third consecutive year.

Despite the defeat, the girls still could hold their heads high knowing that they had only been beaten by a better team : a team under a full-time Chinese Coach who has equipped the players with better skills and strategies.

Five of the players in the Under-18 team led by Captain Leong Pui Kar have been donning the SMKTD's jersey since they were in Form one! (With their absence next year can the team continue to be competitive? )

The Under 15 girls' team :MSSMKL Bangsar Zone - 3rd Place

The Under 15 girls’ team managed to snatch a 3rd place after defeating Methodist Girls’ School. It was truly a remarkable feat as there were only four players were from last year's team and the rest were newcomers.

18th April, 2007 – Final Day of Competition of the MSSMKL Bangsar Zone Volleyball Tournament for Boys, SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur

After three weeks of competition our volleyball boys’ teams made it to the finals. The Under 18 team would be meeting their arch enemies RMC and the Under 15 Team would be facing an unexpected finalist, SMK Sri Sentosa. Although our school teams made it to the finals both suffered defeat in the finals of the MSSMKL Bangsar Zone Volleyball Competition.

The Under 18 team led by captain Lim Jia Wei had to be content with second place again this year.

As both teams were placed second, we still had the opportunity to represent Bangsar Zone for the Inter-Zone Competition held in SMK Chong Hwa, Gombak.

24th April, 2007 – First Day of the MSSMKL Inter-Zone Competition

On the first day of competition, the Under 18 team lost their first match to SMK Chong Hwa but they did not give up and gave their all to win their second match against SMK Confucian. The match was a sight to behold. The boys played with their hearts on their sleeves and they succeeded in outplaying a higher ranked team. Team spirit was on high as they could now very well get a place in the semi-finals. All it would take was one more victory.
On the other hand, the Under 15 team had a bad start to the tournament as they lost both their matches on the first day. It seemed as if there wasn’t a glimmer of hope left for the younger boys.

25th April 2007 – 2nd Day of Competition

Today, the teams were scheduled to play later in the day. The Under 15 team was up first. Their opponents were the champions of Pudu Zone, SMK Dato Lokman.
The boys mustered every strength they had and managed one of the bigger upsets in the tournament. Through an incredible stroke of luck, we secured the second place in Group D, which meant that we were in the semi-finals! In the history of our school never had any team qualified for the semi-finals of the Inter-Zone Volleyball Competition before. This of course boosted the morale of the Under 18 boys who were playing later. They played the very last match of the day and it was an intense affair. We were up against SMK Wangsa Maju R1 and they too wanted a place in the semi-finals. Both teams fought valiantly but our boys outclassed their opponents. The match ended at around half past seven in the evening, but it was well worth the wait. Both our teams were now in the semi-finals!

27th April 2007 – Semi-final matches

The boys went to SMK Chong Hwa bright and early to try to get a place in the finals. The Under 18 team would be facing SMK Tsun Jin and the Under 15 team would be going against SMK D.D. Hussein Onn. Both opposing teams were champs of their own respective zones. Unfortunately, lady luck deserted our teams at this point. Both teams lost in the semi-finals, and both matches could have gone our way. The boys had to to face bitter defeat. So, now with heavy hearts the boys had to be content with getting a bronze for their valiant efforts.

30th April 2007 – Final Day of Competition

The final matches were played and in the end, the host school won both the Under 15 and Under 18 Boys titles. Our boys got their bronze medals and their certificates of participation. Even though they did not get into the finals, they should be proud that they held their own among so many schools in Kuala Lumpur and that they created a little piece of history of their own. It has been years since our school got into the semi-finals of any Inter-Zone Competition and for that, the school wishes to thank our unsung heroes for their courage, strength and commitment.

Special Mention
The school would also like to thank Lee Cheng Mun of SMK Desa Perdana who played for our Under 15 Team as an import player. He gave his all for each and every match. We hope that he will do well in all aspects and wish him the all the best in his future endeavours.

Extra Good News
Two of our Under 18 team have made the first selection for the Inter-State Volleyball Competion which will be held in Sarawak this year. They will attend central training in Titiwangsa and from there perhaps go through the selection phase and be chosen as state players. The two boys are Lim Jia Wei from 5K1 and Choo June Wai from 4K2.

SMKTD'S FIRST ARCHERER

For the first time in the history of SMK Taman Desa, Harrison Ooi, a Form One student represented the school in the MSSMKL Archery Competition. YES! He is SMKTD's very own William Tell!

This is Harrison Ooi’s report

The MSSMKL Archery Competition was spread over a three day period: 20th, 23rd and 24th April 2007.
20th April

I was given the number 9A which meant that I was assigned to target butt 9 and my opponent was the participant numbered 9B. I was a little nervous but I wasn’t about to let that ruin my concentration. We had to shoot over a range of 50 meters. This was quite daunting as I have never shot beyond 30 meters all this while. Fortunately, before the competition began, we were allowed three practice rounds to tune our sights in.

I hit a bull's eye!

The competition started and I was doing quite well until I accidentally shot through the clicker which is a device that clicks when the arrow is drawn to the correct length. I tried to tighten it, but it wouldn’t respond! I had to shoot without it, which meant that I was at a disadvantage. During the last round, I miraculously shot a bull’s eye! In the afternoon I had to shoot 40 meters, which I have also not done before but this time it went more smoothly as the earlier one was much more difficult.

23rd April - Too little, too late!

Today I did not perform well even though my instructor had helped fix the clicker problem. This was because I had not slept well the previous night. Even though I only had to shoot within the range of 20-30 meters I couldn’t quite come up with a stellar performance. Towards the end of the day, I started to get my feel again but it was too little, too late.

24th April- In the top ten!

On the final day of competition, we had to shoot Olympic Round Style at 40 meters. There were 32 participants in all and after two days of competing I was placed in the top ten. This meant that I was through to the second round.

I was pitted against a more experienced student from SMK Victoria in this last event. He had been practicing archery for two years and this was his second competition. We were both doing well at first and after a few rounds he was only three points ahead of me.

On the last round I hit a bull’s eye! And then another one in succession! However, when I stole a glance at my opponent, I realized he had done equally well. Then he hit a six on his last shot, this was my chance! All I needed was another bull’s eye (gold) to win. Unfortunately, lady luck wasn’t with me that day, the moment before I released my arrow, I lost concentration and hit a 5. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe nervousness got into the way or maybe I was still a greenhorn at this.

At the end of the competition, even though I did not win a medal, it was a worthwhile experience. I will try again next year and hopefully win a medal.

On the 23rd of April 2007, Mr. Chan Beng Tuan officially handed over the baton to Mr Gan Peng Kheang as the 9th Principal of SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.

Prior to his appointment , Mr Gan Peng Kheang was the Senior Assistant of Student Affairs of SMK Seri Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

The 20th annual Sports day of SMK Taman Desa was held on the 25th of April 2007, on a sweltering morning at the school field. The hot weather signified intense competition and great excitement ahead!

We were most honoured to have the Chairman of the PTA , Mr. Chang Kim Loong, AMN to grace the occasion.

The day kicked off with the traditional march past .

The smartly dressed uniform groups and students from four houses, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow in bright and colourful apparels marching in step with the beats and rhythms of the Boys’ Brigade Band.
They then assembled in the middle of the school field to take the oath to participate in the events in the spirit of true sportsmanship.

All participants displayed great sportsmanship and demonstrated the great strength of Desarian Spirit.

The athletes were running like they would never run again!

Even the staff and the Committee Members of the PTA had fun!

The overall champion trophy was seized by Blue house, followed by Green in second, Yellow in third and Red the fourth place. Albert Cheong from Blue house was crowned the Sportsman 0f the year, 2007

A Day of Recognition

The 27th Excellent Award Day (Hari Anugerah Cemerlang) of SMK Taman Desa held on the 7th of April 2007, marked another significant day in the history of SMK Taman Desa, Lee Ling Yok and Margaret Lau were jointly awarded the Anugerah Khas Pengetua 2007.

Socrates the Greek philosopher once said 'There is only one good- knowledge and one evil - ignorance'. Our Prime Minister has also been heard saying ‘we must have a knowledge seeking society’. I say, the foundation of every family & community is the education of its youth.' This is a subject which is very dear to us all, a subject I will delve on.

To have excellence in education, I need, the school also needs, the help, cooperation and understanding of the parents. Parental guidance plays a pivotal role in the studies and character development of the child. Parents are a child’s best advocate. Parents must communicate with the child, the teachers and PIBG in order to be updated on the progress of their child's studies in school.

There are things that you parents can do better than a teacher, or a school principal can. Instilling values – including the value of education – is really a parental job. There are many reasons that parental involvement can make an enormous difference in a child’s education. One reason is that as parents you know your own child best, and you are in a position to follow what your child is learning and how well your child is learning. There is another reason for parents to be involved in their child’s education: It can improve achievement. A child whose family values education is more likely to be a child who comes to the classroom ready, willing and able to learn.

William Shakespeare in the The Merchant of Venice once said and I quote "It is a wise father that knows his own child". So father and parents be wise, get to know your own child.

On our part, we will help the school to make the slogan "Berhasrat untuk menjadi sekolah terpilih dalam zon Bangsar" a life long objective. This slogan should stay in the hearts of all who have entered the gates of SMK Taman Desa, irrespective of whether they are students or teachers. Towards this very objective the School and PIBG have in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee Celebrations last year, helped raised funds for the improvement of the school facilities. The amount raised total about RM101,296.00 (nett) as at 23.3.07 (having been audited). With the money raised, the school was able to upgrade the library, computer laboratory LCD Projector and installed a new PA system. A circular on this was sent to all Parents on 13.3.2007. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have contributed and give your unfailing support for the continued success of the School activities.

The PIBG believes that in order for the students to out-perform and for the teachers to perform, there must be good supporting environment and infrastructures for teaching and learning.

On the academic front, the School has achieved significant improvements in the three (3) public examinations ie PMR, SPM and STPM though there is a slight drop in the general performance. We have a student in our School who has scored 12 straight A1s in the SPM and is the 3rd best student in Wilayah Persekutuan. She is Miss Lee Ling Yok, daughter of our fellow PIBG council member, Mr Allen Lee.

Parents and Teachers,
We currently have a good and quality stock of intake of new students scoring 5As in their UPSR examination from their respective primary schools having enrolled in our school and we welcome them all for having chosen this school to further their education. We are proud that our school is entrusted to continue educating high achievers. With the right mental attitude and right guidance from the teachers and with the appropriate coaching materials, we aspire to achieve excellent results to thrust forward the name of this SMK Taman Desa- the preferred School in region. So, Teachers do not let down your chance.

In conclusion, the PIBG wants to help achieve the school’s slogan to be the best school in Bangsar zone and I know you share that goal. Your involvement as teachers and parents in this school can help us reach true excellence. Sekian, Terima Kasih.

On the 7th of March 2007, SMK Taman Desa bid farewell to Mr Chan (the 8th Principal) .

With a heavy heart SMKTD let go of a very dedicated Principal.

Under the dynamic leadership of Mr Chan and with the tremendous support from the PTA, SMKTD has achieved better academic results and many successes in co-curricular activities.
During his tenure too and with the co-operation of the PTA, he has spearheaded various activities to bring improvement to the the school facilities, making SMKTD a more pleasant and conducive environment for learning .

Your retirement is a great loss to the school and we will miss you greatly. We wish you all the best and have a Blessed Retirement!

Silver Jubilee Dinner

A milestone to remember, a time to celebrate:

The climax of the Silver Jubilee celebration of SMK Taman Desa:

Saturday, 29th July 2006 the long awaited night finally arrived .

It marked a momentous occasion for SMK Taman Desa – Yes !A never before event in the History of SMKTD.

The night was truly remarkable. A record of 138 tables were sold! Staff, present and past, Desarians- old and new, parents and generous donors turned out overwhelmingly for the dual objectives celebration : to commemorate the Silver Jubilee and to raise funds for the school.

Among those in attendance were former Principals Tuan Haji Senan and his wife, Mr Phua Ser Chew, Former PTA Chairmen, Mr. Christie Daniels, Madam Tan and Madam Helen Chua.

The guests were treated to a spectacular launching ceremony.

After the officiating speech by the PTA chairman, Mr. Chang Kim Loong AMN, the VIP-donors were invited to the stage.

As soon as Mr. Chang pressed the button, a lantern was released into the air signifying SMKTD is being propelled to soar to greater heights! The beating of drums and pulling of party poppers by the donors, ushered SMKTD into the next quarter of a century .The whole stage was bathed with smoke and glittering colours emanating from the confetti and lights. What a sight!

The School Choir then sang the Theme song, “Bersatu Kita Maju”.

No Silver Jubilee celebration was complete, without the cake cutting ceremony. It made the occasion extra meaningful. The new Desarian joined hand with the old, the Organizing Chairman, Mr. Christie Daniels, the PTA Chairman, Mr. Chang Kim Loong, AMN and the Principal, Mr. Chan Beng Tuan, bringing SMKTD to the climax of her Silver Jubilee in a special way.

Five of the school’s longest serving teachers and a staff were also honoured. Among them were Madam. Chua S. H. and Mr. Long A. K. who have been with the school for 21 years.

Special gifts were presented to the composer and lyricist of the Silver jubilee Theme Song, Miss Lee Y.F. and Mr. Long respectively.

Ng Cheng Pin, a form one student also received his prize . He had the highest individual collection for the Silver Jubilee Jogathon - amounting to RM5010.00

While relishing the sumptuous dinner, guests were treated to incredible performances by the Desarians .

Adding a classical touch to the night, SMKTD’s Chinese Orchestra led by Mr. Chen rendered 3 tunes entitled:
The Strength of Man, The Moon Represents My Heart and The Colours of the Wind.

Next in line were the cultural performances presented by the multiracial Desarians. They depicted the unity of the various races and the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia.

The first troupe of Malay dancers in stunning traditional outfits danced to the tune of a famous Malay song - Dia Datang.

The Chinese dance troupe under the tutelage of Madam Ch’ng E.C. and choreographed by Ms.Amy Len mesmerized the guests with their dance entitled Blooms. The dancers started off in a spirited Ribbon Dance with long Ribbons fabricating various designs and formations.

The graceful dancers then gradually swayed into the Flutter Fan dance. Applause thundered through the amphitheatre.

Finally the energetic Indian dance troupe took over the stage. They presented a dance entitled Kolatum.

There was also a drama staged by the students from the Chinese Society entitled The Rhythm of the Rainbow. It depicted the feelings of the Desarians – their frustration, exhaustion and anxiety. However, not to worry as the Desarians believe that there is always a rainbow after a storm!

After enjoying the performances by the Desarians, were the enticing performances by invited performers.

First, was a talented young man Levin ,who sang a medley of songs and ended with a brief fashion show.

Next, the latest sensation in music NEWZ delivered two Chinese numbers entitled Monday, Tuesday ,Wednesday and Never Ending Love.

Last but not least, Ms Lao Yen Teng soothed the guests with two lovely songs, True Love and Just knew.

The night drew to a close after the grand prize draw .

Indeed it was a night to remember! The memory would linger on for many especially the former Desarians. It was a rare opportunity for them to meet up with old friends, teachers whilst rendering support to their beloved alma mater!

The school’s dream of carrying out various upgrading projects and ultimately to fulfill its vision: To be the Premier School in Bangsar Zone, will soon be realized as teachers, parents, former Desarians and generous donors stretch out their hands to render help.

The dinner will start at 7.30 with a speech by the Organizing Committee Chairman, Mr Christie Daniels and follow by one from the Principal Mr Chan Beng Tuan.

Mr Chang Kim Loong, AMN, the PTA Chairman who is also the Secretary-General of the National House Buyers Association, Malaysia will grace the occasion.

There will be a multimedia presentation showcasing the history; the present and past administrators and the achievements of the Desarians.

The School choir will bring you the Theme Song:
